What is Littering?
Littering is defined as "Leave lying untidily in a place." Just by wlaking down the road, you can see that many people litter, and that is a problem. If many people are littering, then that means that the world is becoming an increasingly filthy place. Despite efforts by the EPA, and Earth Day organizations, roads and waterways are becoming increasingly poluted.
The Long island sound area alone spends billions of dollars on industries relating to the water, including fishing and swimming. Litter that washes up on the beaches, or remains floating in the water, can cause a dip in tourism. Shoreline communities in the sound have the potential to contribute to not only the 56.2 billion pieces of litter on the roads, but the many millions of peices that end up in the sound.
